Caring for yourself after an assault

The first thing to understand is that if you made it home alive, you did everything right. No matter what happens during an assault, no matter what strategies you used or did not use, if you made it home alive, by definition, every decision you made was correct.

After an assault it's normal to experience a range of short-term and long-term symptoms. It is common for a survivor to ride an emotional roller-coaster, have nightmares or flashbacks, feel pain and anxiety, and even to experience difficulties with friends, family, relationships, and finances.

It's important to understand that an assault is not just a cause that creates a certain, singular result (post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD). An assault is often the first domino in a series of challenging emotional and social issues that can continue until the cycle is reversed.
