Breaking Barriers

This dynamic program addresses not only the psychological trauma associated with sexual and physical assault, but to also trigger and relieve physical trauma through exercises and scenarios that are often reminiscent of events that participants have experienced. The most unique aspect of the Breaking Barriers program is that it combines physical movements with psychological group recovery. It is often the self-defense exercises, like how to escape a choke hold, that will trigger an emotional reaction. The program intentionally utilizes these moments to help the survivors recognize their reactions and learn to work through them. For this reason, each participant must have an active relationship with a counselor or be involved in group therapy. Instructors for Breaking Barriers are certified sexual assault counselors and domestic violence advocates. The goal of this multidimensional program is to empower all participants, provide them with practical tools that will keep them safe, and create positive group interaction that will promote healthier social outlets. Breaking Barriers programs are conducted in both group and individual settings.
