Class time: 0800-1700 This open-enrollment class is Part 3 of a 3-day series. Students MUST complete all three days, in sequential order, to receive POST credit. Students have 90 days from their first course to complete the second and third modules. Total of 24 course hours for credit. The purpose of this Field Training Officer Update training is to provide Field Training Officers and their trainees with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform their job safely when dealing with the public and specifically those who have mental health issues, substance abuse issues, or an intellectual and/or developmental disability. This course will provide a review of Module II content. It provides an update on the causes and natures of disabilities, mental illness, and substance ab/use problems; de-escalation and crisis intervention skills; available community resources and supports; effective listening and communication skills; reducing the need to use deadly force; upholding the sanctity of life; building community trust; stress management; and officer suicide risks. Students will participate in learning activities, role plays, and group discussion. This course series provides Perishable Skills: Strategic/Tactical Communication, SB29 credit, and this course provides updated legislative content of Penal Code Section 835a. This training increases officer safety prior to, during, and after contact. **Classes with fewer than 15 students are subject to cancellation**
